The NEWS

Overview

Today was an interesting day. Although I did not get the chance to get to any workshops I am told they were all very good. Today was an exciting day for us students as we got this newspaper onto the net today.

Betsy Frederick

This afternoon we talked about Internet in the Copland Theatre. We had all the work shown on the big screen. She explained to people how the Internet worked and about computers/modem etc. It was a very interesting session there was plenty of questions and answers. Betsy was a very good presenter and she knows what she is doing.

Ozone Testing

In this workshop there is one teacher and three students who tell the group of their ozone monitoring. We are told of how the school uses multimedia to study the environment. They are involved in this project with 70 other schools. They use telecommunications to transmit findings over the Internet. The internet has taken a major role with this project. At the start of this session they supply us with a folder that has the information of their experiments. Towards the end of the folder there is a fill-out sheet that we fill in after we do an experiment, shown to is by the presenters. After this experiment we put the answer into the computer and we have the access to see this data in a graph, or on the world map. We are told that this information is not very important but it gives us the idea of this global project. I feel that this workshop will be informative not only towards the ozone but it gives you some idea of how wide the Internet really is. In my personal view this is a workshop that will not bore you by long winded speeches that do not let the group get involved. This is a very worthwhile workshop.

The Lunch

The Lunch today was an improvement again on yesterdays. It was still fairlly healthy but the quiche was really nice. The cake was nice but the icing on it was not. I was lucky again and got a nice orange juice. I was still dissapointed about the salad and the orange I got because they are both healthy and yuck (horrible). If the orange and salad were replaced by something unhealthy then it would have been very nice. So taday's lunch scores a 6.

Multimedia with Dr G. Rimmington

Buzz Words Do not Ensure Success!

Now that the headline tag got your attention here is a report about a multi-media workshop.

The prospect of attending a workshop on multi-media filled the head of this reporter with pictures about being instructed on how to construct multimedia presentations and look at the way it can be used in the classroom.

Well, the opportunity was offered to the group to construct Web pages but it appeared that people were more interested in "surfing the net" rather than looking at how to construct web pages or multimedia presentations. For a number of the participants the opportunity to use the net, especially Netscape proved too strong a pull. Given that this was the first time that some people had the opportunity to play or experience the net it was understandable why they passed up the opportunity to construct web pages.

The presenter, Dr. Rimmington, showed some examples of student work, the interactive nature of the University Handbook, URL sites to visit and so on. He showed people some of the operation of Netscape, for example how to place an URL address into the bookmark section of the menu.

It was interesting to see how some Melbourne University students had, as part of their course, constructed web pages. Perhaps, there is something here that primary and secondary schools can show the Tertiary institutions about the implementation of these tools in a learning context.

Overall, if you came to this session with no knowledge of the web then this session would have been very useful but for those who had previous experience or were wanting to look at how you use multimedia tools to construct presentations. The session was not very useful.

TEACHING ON THE INTERNET.

Session five on day three for me was "Teaching about the Internet" presented by Jon Warner. Jon taught us what most of the Internet terms mean, like www or html etc.

We had hands on time with the IBM's. Our object was to find pages on the web that can give you some information about the Internet and how to use the Internet.

Jon is going to put up a web page with a lot of links on it to other pages with information on the Internet. You can find this web page at:

This was a very good session on the Internet, especially for beginners. It taught us the basics of how to find information and showed us ways that will enable us to find information about the Internet ourselves.
