STAGE 1. Phase One and Phase Two

The first stage of the two year project enabled students from approximately 100 Victorian schools to take part in network learning activities based around four themes:

Teachers were provided with three "entry point" newsgroups or CONFERENCES with which to begin their interaction with the I*EARN community. (Please note; These newsgroups will only be available to I*EARN Participants)

These were:

iearn.teachers (An international faculty lounge)

iearn.ideas (A formal Project Index)

iearn.youth (An international Student Forum)

Schools were also provided with ONLINE THEME-BASED curriculum projects to work on. Participants were not confined to these areas but were encouraged to use them as a starting point.

These project themes were:

  • Water
  • Atmosphere/Environment
  • Young Authors
  • Holocaust and Genocide Project

Water

The "water" component of the theme based projects revolved around the I*EARN newsgroup called iearn.aqua. This was a VERY popular component of the project and resulted in very high traffic in the conferences.

Students completed an online and hard copy publication called Waterworld.

Atmosphere/Environment

The "Atmosphere/Environment Theme" was also very well supported, with the projects revolving the I*EARN newsgroups called iearn.uv. and iearn.environ.

This saw participants get the chance to work with the NASA flying observatory, and publish their work in an online and hardcopy student magazine called ICARUS.

Young Authors

The "Young Authors" theme was designed to take advantage of the very long I*EARN Tradition of Students from around the globe sharing the poetry, prose and just general commentary. This section of the project resided in a number of conferences which included:

Many of these publcations were distributed around the world.

Holocaust and Genocide Project

The "HGP" project was part of an extensive I*EARN International project that has been examining the Jewish Holocaust and the wider issue of Genocide. The I*EARN International HGP Site is a superb educational resource.

Students at Broadford Secondary College co-ordinated an International HGP Study mission during the April of 1995 and developed the whole presentation in to their HGP WEB SITE, producing their own publication called "The Journey".

Students from across the globe published their work in a magazine published by Coldspring Harbour High School in New York. This magazine is called An End to Intolerance.

The 1995 Year Concluded with a STATE OF THE PLANET meeting at the University of Melbourne.
