As of the 1995-96 school year, the Holocaust/Genocide Project offers many new features to participants.
First and very important, the HGP is currently offering much more data and up-to-date information about the Holocaust, genocide, and several related topics. We encourage teachers and students to research as much information as possible, in order to better understand the historical events, political processes, human action, and reaction, in regard to the Holocaust, genocidal occurrences in history, and current events of bias and hate. In order to make this very large amount of information more easily accessible, the HGP has constructed the I*EARN HGP GOPHER which is publicly available via the internet. An outstanding World Wide Web Site is also available from the I*EARN US centre and this can be viewed at I*EARN International.
Yet, the core of the action in the HGP is found in an electronic interactive conference. I*EARN and the HGP take full advantage of the conferencing structure offered by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC).
The electronic conference iearn.hgp can be found on IGC, Pegasus and on most APC network nodes. If the APC network you access does not carry this conference, you may request it from your APC network administrator, or from your I*EARN Centre Co-ordinator. The I*EARN HGP uses the conference to offer participants information that is unique and exclusively for the I*EARN HGP participants. Among these exciting topics, you will read exclusive interviews with Holocaust survivors and the rescuers who struggled in World War II. You will also find out how to join the annual Poland/Israel Study Mission, how to contribute to our student magazine, AN END TO INTOLERANCE, and you will receive updates on current events.
Undoubtedly, the most important parts of the HGP conference are its interactive topics. Join DISCUSSION groups; participate in our student and teacher FORUMS; make a difference by ACTING NOW, and -- most importantly -- contribute to participant knowledge by taking part in our periodic ASSIGNMENT challenges.
The HGP is based on a varied cross-disciplinary curriculum. The project allows teachers of various subjects to introduce their students to the Holocaust and to genocide from their preferred approach. The HGP also provides for almost any length of involvement. Because I*EARN and the HGP have schools in the southern hemisphere, our conference is active throughout the calendar year. The I*EARN HGP conference has the best possible support for students and teachers.
The HGP conference teacher facilitator is Ms. Honey Kern of Cold Spring Harbor High School in Cold Spring Harbor, New York (USA). Ms. Kern may be reached by e-mail at <coldspring@igc.apc.org>
