iearn.ideas - Operation First Byte

AN INTERNATIONAL PROJECT TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS IMPROVING ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY FOR DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS IN MANY AREAS OF THE WORLD.

The I*EARN One World Teachers'Conference was held in Melbourne, Australia, in July, 1995. Conference delegates considered ways in which teleconferences could contribute towards improving access to technology for disadvantaged students in many areas of the world.

It was decided to work towards the establishment of a new I*EARN Project that would address this problem. It is hoped that access to this technology will allow rapid educational progress and will, in turn, speed the rate of economic progress for the recipient countries.

South African and Australian delegates, Shannon Paul, Bev McDavid, Gregg King and Di McWhirter engaged in preliminary discussions. Subsequently, these led to the launch of the Project, Operation First Byte.

iearn.newplace - Making Schools Better Places

AN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT: MAKING SCHOOLS BETTER PLACES FOR NEWCOMERS

I*EARN, the Discovery (Promised Land) Learning Community and Project Orillas would like to announce a collaborative pilot project that is asking young people (elementary through high school) to explore and analyze what it's like to move to a new place.

The goal of the project is to apply research to form suggestions on how schools can be better for new students.

iearn.recovery - Recovery/Substance Abuse

The purpose of the iearn.recovery Conference is to bring recovery to students world-wide with youth helping youth through their own experiences. The idea for the Recovery Conference came about through a letter that was written on I*EARN by one of our students at ACES High School during the fall of '93, which gave an account of his own recovery experience.

There was such a huge response, world-wide, that we thought it would be wonderful to provide an opportunity for youth to reach out to each other in the area of recovery. By having students provide support through the Recovery Conference, a forum can be made available for students to discuss various topics and use each other as resources for their own healing. In order to insure the best privacy, please review the response to this topic for information regarding anonymous posting to the <iearn.recovery> conference.
