Dear Mr. Hayward:

Welcome to I*EARN! I'm delighted that you'll have a chance to meet directly with students and teachers to hear about their experiences and interests in telecommunications.

Student- and teacher-designed projects are at the heart of I*EARN's global learning curriculum. In collaboration with classes in other parts of the world, I*EARN students and teachers plan parallel community and environmental investigations, shared student publications, and intergenerational and cross-cultural studies. Such projects complement and extend the standard curriculum, providing a motivating context for developing strong writing and academic skills.

These international projects also encourage students to explore issues of global importance such as environmental monitoring and action, mutual aid and international solidarity, and the reduction of prejudice and intolerance. Focusing education on real world issues not only breathes new life into classroom learning but also builds bridges between schools and communities and between people of distant countries and cultures.

Australian students and teachers have played a lead role in designing and facilitating I*EARN's theme-based projects. We're very pleased to hear of your interest in and support for I*EARN in Australia. We look forward to staying in touch with you as we explore the enormous potential for global learning networks to educate students for the world of the 21st century.

With warm regards,
Kristin Brown

Program Coordinator, I*EARN
