Subject: Greetings from Puerto RicoMarch 13, 1995

To: The Honorable Mr. Don Hayward and Friends and Colleagues in AustraliaAs Co-director of the Project "De Orilla a Orilla" (From Shore to Shore), it is with great pleasure that I greet you on this important occasion. In Puerto Rico, we look forward with much enthusiasm to becoming an I*EARN Center so that we might engage in rich cultural and linguistic exchanges with schools in Australia. Project Orillas has now been working for more than a decade in creating international partner class projects for collaborative learning. Orillas and I*EARN share many goals. The most important of these is a commitment to develop new educational strategies and forums for international collaboration so that students have an opportunity to discuss and act on the many pressing issues they collectively face in today's world.
We at the University of Puerto Rico applaud your efforts and successes in helping to create a new educational system for today's youth. Given the complex and changing world our students face, it is of utmost importance that we refocus our educational efforts to address the real needs of the students.
Once again, we send you our warmest greetings and our strongest wishes for continued success in reaching these important goals.
